ISA rules are changing. Here’s what you need to know.

As part of the 2025 Autumn Budget, the total ISA allowance remains at £20,000, but from April 2026, a new cap limits Cash ISAs to £12,000.

This means that to make full use of your allowance, at least £8,000 must now go into a Stocks & Shares ISA.

The good news? Nothing is lost. The shift is simply toward investments.

Over 65? You’re exempt. Your full £20,000 Cash ISA allowance remains.

Prosper is here to help you make most of your Stocks & Shares ISA with zero platform, transfer, or exit fees. We even go the extra mile to refund fund fees on 30+ leading ETFs from the likes of BlackRock, Vanguard, and Fidelity. Uninvested cash doesn’t earn interest.

Capital at risk. Investments can go down as well as up.

What is a Junior Stocks and Shares ISA?

A Junior Stocks and Shares ISA, sometimes called a Stocks and Shares JISA or junior investment ISA, is a tax-efficient investment account for a child under 18.

A parent or guardian with parental responsibility can open the account for an eligible child. The money paid into it belongs to the child and is invested rather than simply held as cash.

£9,000

The tax-free Junior ISA allowance for the 2026/27 tax year, shared across any Junior Cash ISA and Junior Stocks and Shares ISA a child holds between them.

It can be a way to put money aside for university, a first home or whatever matters to them later in life. But because this is a Stocks and Shares ISA for children, the value will move with investment markets and can fall as well as rise.

The child can't normally withdraw the money until they turn 18, when the Junior ISA automatically becomes an adult ISA.

Why choose a Junior Stocks and Shares ISA?

Give their money time

A Junior Stocks and Shares ISA can stay invested for years before your child turns 18. That gives their money more time to grow, although the value of investments may rise or fall and returns are never guaranteed.

Invest without UK tax

Any income or growth from investments in a Junior Stocks and Shares ISA is free from UK Income Tax and Capital Gains Tax. Tax rules can change, but while the money stays in the account, these UK taxes don’t apply.

Keep track in the app

Use the Prosper app to add money, choose investments and see how your child’s Junior Stocks and Shares ISA is doing. You can manage everything in one place and keep track of their account as they grow.

How to open a Junior Stocks and Shares ISA

01

Check you're eligible

A parent or legal guardian with parental responsibility can open a Junior Stocks and Shares ISA for an eligible child under 18. Before you start, have the key details ready, such as the child’s information and any documents we may need to verify parental responsibility.

Open the account in the app

Sign up or log in to Prosper and complete the Junior Stocks and Shares ISA application. We’ll guide you through the account setup step by step, so you can open your child's account in the app in just a few minutes.

Add money and choose investments

Make your first contribution, then choose from Prosper’s range of funds and ETFs. There’s no minimum contribution, so you can invest in the way that works for you and your child’s future up to £9,000 each tax year.

Transferring a Junior Stocks and Shares ISA to Prosper

Already have a Junior Stocks and Shares ISA elsewhere? You can move it to Prosper using the official Junior ISA transfer process.

A child can only have one Stocks and Shares Junior ISA at a time. A transfer between two Stocks and Shares JISAs therefore needs to move the existing account so that the child doesn't finish the process with two accounts of the same type. Using the official transfer process keeps the money within its tax-efficient ISA wrapper. Don’t withdraw the money yourself to move it.

Prosper doesn't charge a transfer fee. Stocks and Shares ISA transfers are normally required to complete within 30 calendar days, although timings depend partly on the existing provider.

FAQs

Who can open a Junior Stocks & Shares ISA?

At this time, you can open one if:

• you are a Prosper member
• you have parental responsibility for the child
• the child is under 16 when you open the account*
• the child meets the usual Junior ISA eligibility rules, which normally means being resident in the UK

*Junior ISA rules allow some 16- and 17-year-olds to open and manage their own account. We’re working to offer this option soon.

What does a Prosper Junior Stocks & Shares ISA cost?

Prosper charges:

• 0% platform fee
• no Prosper transfer fee
• no Prosper exit fee
• no minimum contribution

The investments you choose can still have their own charges. For example, a fund manager may charge an ongoing fee for running a fund. This is separate from Prosper’s platform fee.

You should check the cost of an investment before choosing it.

What happens when my child turns 18?

The Junior Stocks & Shares ISA automatically becomes an adult ISA and your child takes full control of the account. They can manage the investments themselves and can withdraw money if they want to.

Can I withdraw money from my child’s Junior ISA?

Normally, no. Money paid into a Junior ISA belongs to the child and is usually locked away until they turn 18. There are a small number of exceptions. For example, HMRC can allow early access if a child is terminally ill.

If the child dies, the Junior ISA is closed and its assets become part of their estate. You can’t withdraw money because your circumstances have changed or you’d prefer to use it for something else.

How does Prosper make money if the platform fee is 0%?

One way Prosper makes money is by keeping the interest earned on cash left uninvested in investment accounts and in the Prosper wallet.

That’s why you don’t receive interest on uninvested cash in the Junior Stocks & Shares ISA.

Prosper also makes money from other products and services, but this doesn’t change the 0% Prosper platform fee on the Junior Stocks & Shares ISA.
